Our trip to MOMA

Located in midtown Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 as an educational institution. Alfred H. Barr, Jr., its founding director always intended the museum to be dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the visual arts of our time, providing New York with “the greatest museum of modern art in the world.” From an initial gift of eight prints and one drawing, the Museum of Modern Art’s collection has grown to include over 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. Nearly 90 years later its rich and varied collection has established itself as one of the most comprehensive and wide-ranging views into modern art. I just wanted to share with you some of my favourites; some from “famous masters”, some from names you’ll recognise and others from artists i’ve only just been introduced to myself. I hope you enjoy. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take photos inside the Bruce Conner exhibition, but you can read and see more about it here. Absolutely mesmerised by Munch. As was another …

My 7 from Society 6 – Pt 2

I wrote a post last November about some new art purchased from Society 6 for chez Making Spaces. As you may already know, our house does not need ANY more art. Any at all. But I seemed to have filled my basket again. It’s one of the downsides of working in interiors, you’re constantly searching for cool stuff for other people and invariably, you find a lot of stuff you’d rather like for yourself. Let me show you what i’ve been finding for projects and ogling for myself… abyss of the disheartened : IX by Heather Landis I have no idea why this reminds me of our wedding day (we didn’t even get our feet wet), but it does. Makes me ponder the whole “relationships” thang. And makes me smile. I like how they’re together, holding hands, but they’re apart. I guess you can interpret it exactly how you want to. Which is why art is so bloody amazing. And important in adding interest to a space. think by LouiJoverArt Yes, another “note to self” print. I need to …

Eugenia Loli

I’ve been a fan of Surrealist art since I can remember. I bought my very first “art book” when I was about thirteen. From Woolworths. I felt so grown up. Which was probably undermined by grabbing a bag of pick n’ mix shortly after. I flipping loved this book though, so much so it’s followed me to every place i’ve lived. Now sitting on a table in my living room. I still flick through it from time to time and am drawn to the same pieces I was over twenty years ago. René Magritte has always been the one to make to smile. The Son of Man is probably his most recognisable piece (the man with the bowler hat and apple in front of his face). But you may also recognise some of his other works too. All of which I love. (Clockwise from top left) The Son of Man, The Treachery of Images, Not to be Reproduced, The Lovers II Remember, I added a pipe to the gallery wall in the Sherwood Forest project as a nod …

Evermade

This week has been a bit pants. My three year old came down with chicken pox on Monday (booo). So I’ve been indoors and on calamine duties all week, trying my best to fit in design work, book tradespeople, reschedule appointments and keep up with the blog. #Stressed! Something that did put a smile on my face however, was a delivery from Evermade. I had been eagerly awaiting its arrival and it popped through my letterbox on Tuesday: Day 2 of “The Pox”. Evermade is an independent online store with an ever expanding collection of carefully curated items; contemporary art prints, cool stationery, gifts, clothing and illustrated goods. I dare you to go on there and not find something you like. Evermade very kindly offered to send me some goodies to review and, like a kid in a sweet shop, I spent hours on their site ogling every piece of art. As you may already know, art is something that takes up a lot of my wall-space. And head-space. I love finding new artists, and find I did. …

Ode to Tretchikoff

Did I tell you i’m re-doing my bedroom? Well I am. None of it needed doing, I just fancied a change. A big one. Part of the complete re-design included some new art. Blue Lady, Attasit Pokpong I wrote a piece a month or so ago about some new artist discoveries i’d made. One in particular by Thai artist, Attasit Pokpong had the kind of inky teal tones I wanted my new room to be covered in. Well, after extensive research that particular piece wasn’t available as a print and the original was also enormous. And sold. **sigh**. So the search continued. I started looking for something like the classic 1952 painting, The Chinese Girl by Vladimir Tretchikoff. Also affectionately known as The Green Lady. You’ll all have seen this one doing the rounds in charity shops for the last 20 years or so. Well now it’s considered a bit of a cult classic and this one above was for sale at The Vintage Home Show a couple of weeks ago in Leeds. I was very tempted …
