And we’re in! The Loft Extension – Wk 2

So where were we? (catch up on Wk 1 here) That’s it, the dormer was up and the new roof-line was ready to tile. Blimey, so much has happened since then. Come see. Phone pic Ta-da! A newly tiled roof with gable end. Going to take some getting used to the new house shape. The aluminium windows for the dormer have been measured and priced up. Our first quote of over £4.5k made me cry a little inside. Then punch a cushion. I know aluminium is expensive. I do know this. But £4.5k? That’s a car right there. Which reminds me, the quote for the windows came in the day before my car failed its MOT which cost me £700. **sigh** What do they say? When it rains it pours… something like that. The windows, however were something I wasn’t prepared to compromise on (along with everything else). They needed to be big. The bigger the better. And these are going to be just that. Don't Move – Improve!

So you might have heard me mention recently, we’re converting our loft. It’s kind of a big deal for us. We’ve played around with several extension ideas since we moved here, discounting a loft extension at one point because we needed it so much for storage. (rubbish phone pics) We definitely, didn’t want to move. We already knew when we bought this place four years ago, it was a little on the small side. We were seriously lacking on the guest bedroom front and resorted to lugging a mattress downstairs for friends and family to sleep on our living room floor. And you know what. It sucked.   Well no more. With the help of our amazing parents and the savings we’ve been squirrelling away, we finally decided a hip to gable loft extension is the best solution to all of our space problems. The Edwardian Master Bedroom

Let me introduce you to a new project. A four bedroom Edwardian, stone-built property with most of its period features, full of character, books, art, family memories, two kittens, a cat, colour and pattern. The house is absolutely full of life, but needs some work to get it looking its best. Where to start? The master bedroom of course. With these awesome views of some of the best green bits of Huddersfield, it’s time to bring some of that outdoors in. There are some key pieces that are definitely staying. The first being the Compton wallpaper by William Morris. That HAD to stay, in fact, this whole room has been planned around it. We needed more. The beautiful curved wood armchairs with William Morris fabric, of course they are staying. Oh and the gorgeous chest of drawers aren’t going anywhere either. All definitely keepers. We have paint

I’ve had an exciting delivery this week, even the Fedex guy mentioned how “posh” these paints are. It’s not for me mind, it’s for the Masonic Villas project. I’ve never worked with Farrow and Ball paints before and have heard so much about it; how the natural pigments enhance the colours, making them richer, deeper and more complex, subtly changing in tone throughout the day. Am really looking forward to the next few weeks. Time to see F&B, up on some walls, doing its thing. Before and After – The Open Plan Kitchen

When you’re buying a new house, you have to take into account many things. Location. Price. Chain, no chain. Outdoor space. Opportunities to extend. Local facilities. Area. The neighbours. Schools and Ofsted. You have to prioritise and make sacrifices. We were moving when I was pregnant, in my third trimester so buying a complete renovation project wasn’t an option, although financially it would have been a much better decision at the time. But we also couldn’t afford the finished article either. The house we fell for was a compromise. A compromise with so much potential. Not to my taste, but they were beautifully presented and you could see the owners had done a fair amount of work.
